On Monday, March 7, the Spalding County Commissioners will vote on a playground/fitness area planned for Wyomia Tyus Park.  Spalding County has received a grant from the Resurgens Foundation to build a specially-designed “all abilities” playground inside the park, but the project needs final approval from the BOC before Spalding County Parks and Recreation can begin the project.
Parks and Recreation believes that this playground could be the first-ever truly accessible playground/fitness trail combination in the state of Georgia for children of all abilities.
The playground/fitness area promotes wellness, fitness and activities to stimulate motor and sensory skill development for children ages 2 to 12. “It has been designed to be truly accessible by all users so as to provide the same play experiences for all children,” says Spalding County’s parks and recreation website (www.spaldingparksandrec.com).  “Multiple user groups have been considered in the design including wheel chair users, those utilizing walking aides, cochlear transplants, children with Autism and more.”
The playground will be placed on the walking trail near the soccer fields at Wyomia Tyus Olympic Park, allowing for exercise and rehab components to be included into one concept. Four accessible exercise and stimulation stations will be added along the trail as well.  These stations will be specifically designed for children of all abilities and will include activities offering touch, noise, and color stimuli.
This playground and fitness area was made possible by donations from the Resurgens Foundation as well as Caterpillar Corporation.
After the commissioners approve the project, more information will be available and will appear in the next issue of The Grip.
