>Annual music festival brings women of blues to Barnesville

>

The seventh annual Barnesville BBQ and Blues Festival, scheduled for April 22 and 23 includes several well-known women of the blues genre.  Beverly “Guitar” Watkins, “Georgia Blues Songbird” EG Kight and Veronika Jackson will be taking the stage to perform during the festival.

Beverly “Guitar” Watkins is 72 years old and has been singing the blues since her school days. At only eight years old, Beverly Watkins received her first guitar. She called it Stella, and she would play it Friday nights when she accompanied her grandfather to the community barn dances near their home south of Commerce, Ga.
She continues to perform and has become a well-known fixture at Underground Atlanta, captivating the crowd with moves like playing the guitar behind her head.
Watkins will receive the Georgia Music Legend Award on Saturday night at the festival, after sitting in with EG Kight.
EG Kight
Kight is known as the “Georgia Blues Songbird” and is from Dublin, Georgia.  Her latest release, “It’s Hot in Here,” climbed to number one on the roots blues charts and on Sirius XM Satellite Radio.  Honored with six Blues Music Award nominations, twice for Song of the Year, her tunes have a universal reach.
She has been recording in Macon with producer Paul Hornsby on a new album, which she anticipates will be called “Lip Service.”
“I’m looking forward to coming back to Barnesville,” said Kight.  “I played there about five years ago and I really enjoyed it.”
“I’m also looking forwarding to tasting the barbeque,” said Kight with a laugh.
