>Spalding Animal Shelter needs tile before opening

>During last night’s county BOC meeting, Virginia Beams told the board that the Spalding Animal Shelter “looks absolutely fabulous.”  She reported that though there were setbacks during the repainting process, the entire facility has now been painted and the parts of the parking lot had been repaved.

“The question at this point,” said Beams, “is about the request to put tile up.  There are no budgeted funds for this,” she said to the commissioners.

Commissioner Flowers-Taylor responded that the shelter had been closed for four months now, and that their operating budget should cover the tile.  “I understand that we’ve still been paying people; I still don’t understand what they’ve been doing if they haven’t been bringing dogs in.”

The tile would be placed in each pen where the dogs scratch and paw to try to open the door and would prevent the problem of flaking and peeling paint.  The Department of Agriculture originally shut down the shelter due to flaking paint and exposed concrete, which can harbor diseases and bacteria.

The cost of the tile totals $5,000 and it will take another seven days to complete the tiling project.

Flowers-Taylor moved to allow the commissioner’s contingency budget to cover any shortfalls in the animal shelter operating budget, which passed with a 4/0 vote.  Commissioner Gilreath was not present.
