Editors’ Note: The original article, published in the March 31 edition of The Grip, failed to mention Uncle B’s address – 318 E. Solomon Street in Griffin. Stop by and tell them The Grip sent you!
Hidden between two buildings downtown, Uncle B’s is easy to miss. In fact, I’ve missed it the last seven months that it has been open. Walking in, however, the needle-point sign saying “Those who give love gather love” demonstrates exactly what you are about to experience. You come in to sweet “hellos,” and when they ask how you are, they seem as if they genuinely want to know. Service like this makes you happy to live in a small town.
“Fly Me to the Moon” playing softly in the background, I chose my lunch for the day – smoked chicken, mashed potatoes, string beans, macaroni & cheese, and cornbread. (Is your mouth watering yet?) Don’t be misled by their small bowls for your sides, they pile the food on as high as it will possibly go and then some. Ask for gravy and it will be poured like it should be – all over the place. The food was great, all with its own distinct flavor – the mashed potatoes were obscenely good and I went back for glass after glass of their impeccably satisfying sweet tea. And if it tells you anything, one woman danced before she ordered the macaroni and cheese.
After polishing off the last of my cornbread, a pound cake came straight out of the oven… and let’s be honest, who is going to say “no” to fresh, hot pound cake? Served with a heaping amount of strawberries, it was impossible to not finish this mountain of simple sweetness.
If you are looking for something that tastes like mama’s cooking and dad’s grilling, this is the place to visit. Fully implementing true southern hospitality, Uncle B’s is a stress-free and totally satisfying dining experience.
