SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::
The Griffin Police Department is investigating a Saturday evening shooting that left one young woman wounded.
According to Lt. Michael Natale, the incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. in a North 9th Street park.
Natale said the incident involved five individuals, and that the shooter has been identified as an 18-year-old female.
Lt. Mike Richardson, the lead investigator, reported that he had intended to seek a warrant for aggravated assault against the shooter, but that was reconsidered after additional evidence came to light.
“The female was protecting her sibling who was being jumped on,” Natale said, adding that a witness to the incident had produced a cell phone video. “He (Richardson) confirmed by the video that she (the shooter) was concerned for her sibling, so she pulled a gun out of her purse and fired two shots.”
The victim, identified only as another young female, sustained a single gunshot wound to the hip. She was transported by Life Flight to Atlanta Medical Center where she remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Richardson said his investigation remains ongoing, and he anticipates seeking warrants against multiple subjects Monday.
