SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

A third family member has been arrested and charged with abusing a ten-year-old Griffin boy who authorities say was severely starved, physically abused and imprisoned in the family home.

Ethan Washburn, the victim’s 20-year-old step-brother, is accused of committing what authorities described as numerous violent attacks.

According to two arrest warrants issued by Spalding County Magistrate Judge Sam Parks, Washburn is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault by strangulation.

Griffin Police Department Investigator Anadia Ruiz in her arrest warrant affidavit alleged that “the accused (Ethan Washburn) did chock (sic) his step-brother, using both hands placing them around his neck.”

A second arrest warrant states Washburn physically assaulted his step-brother on many occasions.
“Said accused did make an assault upon the person of (victim), by the use of his fist with intent to seriously his bodily safety by attacking his autistic step brother using his fist to repeatedly punch in him in the body head and face know that the victim was unable to defend himself leaving him seriously injured after the incidents that occurred often (sic all),” Ruiz alleged in the second warrant.

Washburn is being held without bond in the Spalding County Jail.

The victim’s parents, Tyler and Krista Schindley are charged with criminal attempt to commit malice murder, criminal attempt to commit second degree murder, false imprisonment, cruelty to children, battery and simple battery.

Griffin Police Department Investigator Jodi Spears identified both Tyler and Krista Schindley as “primary aggressors” who abused their ten-year-old son by Intentionally withholding food for an extended period of time, causing physical and visible injuries, allowing and knowing of dental injury and disfiguration and not intervening or providing medical treatment and locking the child inside a bedroom, leaving him alone in the residence for extended periods of time and on multiple occasions with no access to lights, food, clothing or adult interaction and assistance.

Tyler and Krista Schindley also face child abuse charges related to other victims. They have each been charged with four additional counts of third-degree cruelty to children for allegedly committing family violence, specifically battery and simple battery, against the ten-year-old in the presence of his four younger siblings.

Krista Washburn Schindley, left, and her husband, Tyler Matthew Schindley, appeared before Superior Court Judge Ben Coker for a June 12 statutory bond hearing. After determining neither suspect has legal counsel, Coker continued their bond hearings until June. The Schindleys are charged with starving their ten-year-old son, and also face additional child cruelty charges for allegedly abusing their son in the presence of his four younger siblings. Both Schindley suspects were initially deemed to be flight risks and denied bond.

Statutory bond hearings were then held May 23, before Superior Court Judge Ben Coker.

Because neither suspect had obtained legal representation, Coker continued those hearings until June 12.

Tyler and Krista remain without legal counsel, which resulted in Coker again continuing their statutory bond hearings until June 26.
