SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

Several employees of the Spalding County Animal Shelter have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation being conducted by the Sheriff’s Office.

After receiving information alleging serious issues involving the Animal Shelter, The GRIP submitted an Open Records request for information related to any 2023 investigation.

Spalding County Manager Steve Ledbetter responded, stating no documents are currently available as those in existence are exempt from release pursuant to attorney-client privilege.

However, Dr. Ledbetter did provide a statement confirming an active investigation is ongoing.

“Concerns of personnel policy violations at the Spalding County animal shelter were brought to our attention within the last few days, and immediate steps have been taken to ensure the safety of our animals and the integrity of our facility. Several employees were placed on administrative leave as the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office conducts a thorough investigation. When the investigation concludes, we will release the details. Unfortunately, we can’t comment any further on an ongoing investigation,” Ledbetter said. “Thank you for reaching out and please know we are anticipating the conclusion of the investigation so that we can share more details.”

The GRIP will continue to follow this developing story and report additional information as it becomes available.

    Or animals are like babies they need someone to take care of them if they wind up in the shelter hopefully they’re treated well but evidently something has came up I hope the investigation gets the ones involved prosecuted

    This is the same animal shelter that the Spalding BOC wasted our tax dollars on instead of spending it on a new jail. Our Sheriff needs to be better funded but the Spalding BOC instead chose something that benefits the Community far less.
