SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

Mike Yates on Tuesday submitted his letter of resignation as chief of the Griffin Police Department.

Yates had been on paid administrative leave since April 28.

“This action (Yates’ administrative leave) was taken in connection with the pending GBI investigation requested by District Attorney Marie Broder into the matter involving Sgt. D’Marquivius “DJ” King which – as also previously reported – led to Sgt. King’s placement on administrative leave in February,” Griffin City Manager Jessica O’Connor said in April.

Broder on Sept. 26 announced she will be presenting that GBI case to a grand jury in November.

“Upon receiving the report from Special Agent Adam Thompson with the GBI, I assigned the case involving DJ King to my Fayette County Office. They have reviewed the report, and I met with the entire team last week. It is our decision to present this case to a Spalding County Grand Jury. As the new grand jury for the September term will not be impaneled until October 4, I will recall the September grand jurors in November to hear evidence in the case,” Broder said. “The investigation did reveal policy violations, and I forwarded a letter of notice to City Manager Jessica O’Connor regarding those.”

Broder requested the GBI after an exclusive investigation by The GRIP revealed GPD Sgt. King had been disciplined for concealing the alleged involvement of his brother, Damon Beck, in the May 9, 2021, murder of Javarreis Reid.

Following Broder’s announcement, King submitted his letter of resignation.

O’Connor held a disciplinary hearing for Yates on Thursday, Sept. 28.

The following day, O’Connor confirmed Yates had not resigned.

“Governmental employees are entitled to due process so I have not made a decision about Yates at this time. He remains on administrative leave following his conference.I hope to have resolution to the matter early next week.”
