>Griffin’s 6th Street bridge moved by Sept. 2011

>

The consulting and engineering firm of PBS&J and Atkins Company will be presenting seven potential sites to reuse the twin, Steel Warren truss bridges. In September of 2011 the 6th Street Bridge is being replaced by Georgia Department of Transportation with a new bridge. There has been much community discussion on what will happen to the old bridge. On February 8, 2011 at 6 p.m. the consultant will present the City Commission with their study on potential sites to utilize the old structure. The presentation will take Place at One Griffin Center.

The bridge features two pin-connected thru truss spans placed side by side on concrete column bents and is the only bridge of its kind in Gerogia.  The original fabrication date is unknown, but is estimated circa 1887.

Due to old age and deterioration, it will be removed from its current location and GDOT will construct a new bridge.

The seven potential sites identified are Taylor Street linking 5th Street and the school campus; Kelsey Avenue at Park; City Park Golf Course; S. Hill Street near Piggly Wiggly shopping center; the UGA Griffin campus; Troublesome Creek; Teamon Road.
