Third cocaine trafficking, aggravated assault suspect in police custody

Tony Lamar Parks, 21, the third and final suspect being sought in connection to a Dec. 3 undercover crack cocaine buy bust operation in the Lowe’s parking lot that resulted in an attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault on police officers is now in custody.

According to Sgt. Richard Phillips, of the Griffin Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit, Parks has turned himself in to law enforcement authorities.

Officials said the incident began when an undercover confidential informant arranged to purchase a trafficking quantity of crack cocaine in an operation including agents of the GPD, the Pike County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Police say the three suspects arrived in a Ford Excursion and after a brief conversation with the UCI, two of the men pulled firearms and attempted to commit an armed robbery.

“They demanded money and threatened to kill the CI if he did not give up the money,” said Capt. Dwaye Jones.

This was witnessed by several surveillance officers who immediately intervened to protect the suspect.

Officers secured one suspect, but two fled the scene, one on foot and the second in the Excursion, which was allegedly driven erratically through the parking lot in the direction of the officers.

“Two officers discharged their weapons, shooting tires, in an attempt to disable the vehicle so that the suspect could not leave the scene,” Jones said.

The suspect managed to exit the parking lot, but soon abandoned the vehicle in the Glenn Eagle apartment complex, where authorities say he then fled on foot.

Two weapons were recovered from inside the Excursion.

Arrested at the scene was 27-year-old Rashawn Antwane Giles, of 1611 Hallmark Drive. A second suspect, 19-year-old Tahron Daniels, was apprehended Dec. 9, in a Spalding Heights apartment.

Parks has been charged with two counts each of aggravated assault, armed robbery, criminal attempt trafficking cocaine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, criminal attempt sale of cocaine and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Giles has been charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempt trafficking cocaine, criminal attempt party to a crime and criminal attempt sale of cocaine.

Daniels has been charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempt trafficking cocaine, criminal attempt sale of cocaine, criminal attempt party to a crime and criminal attempt sale of cocaine.
