GPD begins fund-raising for local Special Olympians

From staff reports

Officers of the Griffin Police Department are once again working to raise funds for the annual Special Olympics Torch Run.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest statewide grassroots fund-raiser for Special Olympics

Inc. Currently, all 50 states and 35 nations participate; it is truly a worldwide movement.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Georgia is a community based, state wide event which carries the Flame of Hope throughout your community. The objective is to raise funds and awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics Georgia.

All monies raised are used towards the funding of the six games which take place statewide, including state winter, summer and fall Games, Horse Show, State Sailing and Master’s Bowling.

It costs approximately $147 per athlete to send them to one of these games, but our athletes do not have to pay to attend any of the State Games.

We understand times are hard, but no donation is too small – pennies become dollars and dollars make

a difference.

The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition

in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them

opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate

in the sharing of gifts, skill and friendships with their families.

All of these combined help bring these individuals with intellectual disabilities into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens.

Please help us make a difference in the lives of these very special athletes. With your financial support,

we can continue to make The Law Enforcement Torch Run a valuable asset to the Special Olympics
