Downtown Griffin is where to be for Halloween

Each year, thousands of families bring their young ghouls, superheros and princesses to  ‘haunt’ downtown Griffin and go trick-or-treating at the many businesses that give out candy and coupons.

Event organizer Kenda Woodard, Griffin Main Street Director, expects participation to be just as high this year, if not higher due to additional events and attractions.

From 4-6 p.m. on Halloween, children 12 and younger dressed in costume will begin trick-or-treating at the Park at Sixth and hopefully make a loop around downtown, ending back at the park for “Thrillin’ in the Park” from 6-7:30 p.m.

Families are encouraged to begin at the park to pick up free maps of participating businesses.  This map will list and show the location of all the participating shops, offices and restaurants within the walkable, Historic Downtown area (5th Street to 9th Street, Taylor Street to Broad Street, Hill Street, Solomon Street, Wall Street, and Bank Street).   The first 400 children will also receive a free trick-or-treat bag, filled with flyers and coupons from participating businesses.

A costume contest beginning at 6 p.m. will be held at the Park at Sixth for children in three age categories; up to 6 years old, and the first 25 children 7 to 11, and 12 to 15.  All children up to age 6 will receive a small token, and multiple prize winners will be announced in the other two age groups.

Also new to the downtown Halloween event is a planned  “Thriller Dance Performance” taking place live in the Park at Sixth at 7 p.m.  The Griffin Main Street Program is currently seeking dancers to participate in this phenomenal dance experience, featuring music and dance from Michael Jackson’s Thriller Music video.  Any individuals or groups interested in participating are asked to contact Woodard at 770-228-5356, or by email at

Selected dancers will receive a link to a specially choreographed dance routine, via “You Tube” to begin their practice. A live group rehearsal featuring all dancers will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at noon at the Griffin Welcome Center, 143 N. Hill Street.

Businesses that would like to participate should contact Woodard no later than Oct. 18.  Businesses located outside of the walkable downtown area are invited to set up tables along East Solomon Street.  Ω
