Public to Honor Veterans at Candler Field Museum

STAFF REPORTS :::

Candler Field Museum has announced the 7th Annual Honor Our Veterans Day will be held on Saturday, November 9th at the Williamson GA Airport on Hwy 362. Veterans and their families will be honored at the all-day free event with patriotic music, great food, honor guards, and flybys of antique military aircraft including AT-6 and Stearman Trainers.

General David Poythress, past Commander of the Georgia National Guard, will be the Featured Speaker. The General has also served as Secretary of State and Commissioner of Labor in Georgia. His program begins at 1:30 pm preceded by the patriotic music provided by the Spalding High School Band and the Choral Group from Oak Hill Baptist Church.

2013 is the anniversary of 50 years from the beginning of the Vietnam War and the 40th anniversary of the return of our troops. The last U.S. troops pulled out in March of 1973. During this year’s ceremony, Vietnam Veterans will be acknowledged and welcomed home in a special ceremony.

The Candler Field Museum provides displays of military equipment, drill teams, and gun salutes throughout the day. ” Our event is a great way for families to show children the importance of honoring those who have served our country,” explains Ron Alexander, the founder of the event. “While all veterans of all wars will be honored, those of us who served in Vietnam will receive special recognition this year. It has been 40 years since the return of our troops. We may not have felt a real strong ‘welcome home’ back in those tumultuous times. Now is the time for all of us to demonstrate our appreciation for their service.”

A non-profit venture, The Candler Field Museum, is developing a replica of the Atlanta Airport as it was in the 1920s. The museum displays old planes, often restored on site, and a variety of old cars, photos, and vintage items that create the museum. The airport is an active grass runway for small planes.
