7-year-old found dead; GPD investigating circumstances

STAFF REPORTS :::

The Griffin Police Department on Wednesday morning responded to a 911 call reporting a child who was not breathing.

Upon arriving at the 118 S. Brawner St. residence, the initial responding officer found the child was deceased.

A death investigation was immediately initiated, and the preliminary investigation indicates the child passed away from natural causes and that no foul play was involved.

It has been confirmed by the Spalding County Coroner’s Office that the child did have sickle cell anemia and a history of medical conditions.

The child’s body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for an autopsy, as is standard procedure in the death of a child.

The initial 911 call was made by a minor sibling at the residence.

There were no adults present when the police arrived on the scene.  The Spalding County Department of Family and Children Services was notified and responded to the scene and took custody of two children, a nine-year-old girl and a one-year-old boy.

The mother, Shuntavious Harps, was not present but did arrive on the scene shortly after GPD personnel arrived.

Pending the results of the investigation, investigators will be consulting with the Spalding County District Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.
