Griffin city manager to name new GPD chief this week

Griffin City Manager Kenny Smith has selected a candidate to head up the Griffin Police Department and said he will release a formal statement naming the new chief-of-police this week.
“I’m in the process of naming a chief. If not tomorrow, then Thursday,” Smith said. “It will probably be Thursday.”
Upon the conclusion of the application process, Smith conducted interviews over two days, with current GPD personnel, or internal candidates, interviewed Feb. 7, and external candidates interviewed Feb. 14.
Smith previously stated there was no established time frame for filling the chief-of-police position, and that he would take as long as necessary to ensure the best person for the job was selected.
Smith has confirmed the candidate he selected was among the initial applicants, and also that the chosen candidate is not a GPD officer.
“What Chief Strickland has been doing is going over this with the internal candidates that were not chosen because I thought we needed to do that face-to-face rather than them hearing about it through some media outlet,” Smith said.
He is uncertain when the new chief-of-police will assume that position, but anticipates he will soon take command of the department.
“Probably sometime in April, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet,” Smith said.
As part of the Police Department restructuring approved Dec. 10 by the Griffin Board of Commissioners, the new chief will succeed current Chief Frank Strickland, who will continue serving as public safety director.
