Board of Education approves hiring of new GHS Bears football coach

Jarrett Laws, who most recently held the position of head football coach at Drew High School in Clayton County, will immediately take the helm in that same capacity at Griffin High School.
Laws hiring was on Tuesday evening approved by a vote of 3-0-1, with Board of Education members Barbara Jo Cook, Pete Graham and Chairman Jim Westbury approving and Mike Kendall abstaining from the vote. Zachary Holmes was absent.
Laws has not been officially designated the Bears football coach, but rather was hired as a teacher at Griffin High School. He will later be nominated for that position by Superintendent Curtis Jones and the board is expected to approve.
According to Jones, there will be no further delays in spring football training, as Laws will be allowed to immediately begin working with the Bears, who in December 2013 claimed the state championship following an undefeated season.
In other personnel action, the Board of Education named Shavon Beckett as assistant principal of Orrs Elementary School.
Also on Tuesday’s agenda was the naming of a successor to the position of assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, but that item was tabled for later consideration. That position is currently held by Denise Burrell, whose retirement will become effective upon the end of the 2013-2014 school term.
