If you don’t like something, change it

DUSTY TAKLE :::

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” – Maya Angelou

As I approach 40 this October, this quote by Maya Angelou keeps resonating in my head. In my spirit. In all of me. There are two parts to this quote: The first part deals with changing something. The second part deals with accepting the something for the way it is and changing the way you see it. The second part seems to come more easily for me. I have learned for a while now that if I change the way I look something, that something I look at changes. I’ve seen evidence of this in my life time after time. I know that my attitude towards things is the key in living out the scripture, “I came that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) My attitude towards life makes living to the full possible. I know this. It’s the first part that I find difficult.

“If you don’t like something, change it.” Of course, this deals with those things that are only within our power to change. I had already decided that my gift to myself for my 40th birthday will be the ability to say no to people without feeling the need to justify the why. But to simply be able to respond, “That’s not going to work for me.” I spend a good portion of my life justifying why something is not going to work for me or fit into my already full days with a husband, three children, a dog, and a farm. We all spend a good portion of our lives not saying no, because we don’t want to disappoint anyone. As a result, we wind up with a full calendar. Everyday filled with…..something. Because, we fail to change that something. We fail to use our ability to say no. We run the risk of becoming resentful and blaming others for what we are fully responsible for.

This quote screamed even louder to me when my daughter began practicing a song for the upcoming show, “Adam Grubbs in The Magic of Reading: Through the Looking Glass.” She sings, “Naughty” from the musical, Matilda. These are the lines that caught my attention:

But nobody else is gonna put it right for me

nobody but me is gonna change my story

Just like you, I have areas in my life that I need to grow in. To grow up in. And, while I know my life is not my own, and that I am called to love and serve…..I am also called to be loved. And, it’s okay to just be. To say no. And, that’s my something I have the ability to change.

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.” What do you have the ability to change that needs changing in your life?
