STAFF REPORTS :::
The Griffin Police Department on Wednesday released a statement regarding “The Purge” meme circulating on social media sites.
The press release states the GPD is very aware of the so-called “Purge” event that is circulating throughout social media claiming there will be such an event in Griffin this Friday night, Aug. 29.
“Purge” threats have sprung up in cities across the country, but all have turned out to be a hoax.
At this time, the Griffin Police Department has no credible information that such an event will actually occur and further states that no crime is ever legal as claimed to be in the movie on which this Internet claim is based.
Authorities say GPD officers will be actively and aggressively patrolling and investigating all reported crimes the night of the 29th, as is the case every night they work.
“Anyone choosing to participate in criminal activity as result of the “Purge” will be arrested and prosecuted,” said Lt. Mike Richardson, of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division.
