GPD investigating Wednesday night shooting incident

The Griffin Police Department is investigating a case of entering auto and aggravated assault that occurred Wednesday night at the Griffin Crossings apartment complex.
According to Lt. Mike Richardson, of the Criminal Investigation Division, the incident began as an alleged case of entering auto.
“A witness saw two black males allegedly breaking into a car. He contacted the victim (the vehicle’s owner), who was a neighbor and told him what was happening,” Richardson said. “They went outside and saw the two guys rummaging through the car and yelled for them to stop it.”
It was at that time the initial witness and the vehicle’s owner allege they came under gunfire.
“One of the two suspects brandished a weapon and began shooting at the witness and the victim of the entering auto. Now, both those men are victims,” Richardson said. “No one was hurt in the shooting. There was no report of anyone being hit and injured.”
Initial reports indicated six or seven shots were thought to have been fired, but Richardson said the actual count will be higher.
“I don’t have an exact count of how many shells were recovered, but I do believe it was around a dozen,” he said.
This investigation is “very active,” he said. Anyone with information related to this case is asked to contact Cpl. Kelly McKinney or Sgt. Karen Yancy at 770.229.6450.
