The Griffin Police Department has released the identities of three suspects in the Monday evening murder of 21-year-old Demarkis Willis, of 409 15th St.
Investigators said numerous witnesses provided information which resulted in arrest warrants being obtained for Amahjea Williams, age 17, Cornelius Henderson, age 23 and Yohance Hines, age 18.
All three suspects are from Griffin and remain at-large.
According to Lt. Mike Richardson, of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division, officers were dispatched to Ma & Pa Grocery located at 1137 Meriwether St., just after 5 p.m. in response to a report of a man being shot. Upon arrival, Willis was located on the ground near the store’s car wash.
Spalding Regional Hospital Emergency Medical Services transported Willis to the emergency room where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Soon after the incident occurred, GPD investigators, with assistance from the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, determined Willis was not shot at Ma & Pa Grocery.
After examining the scene and interviewing witnesses, it was determined Willis was shot near a house behind Regency Apartments located in the 1100 block of West College Street Extension. Willis then fled to Ma & Pa Grocery where he collapsed in the parking lot.
Investigators say further interviews determined several male subjects had been fighting throughout the day over stolen property.
Richardson said the fights began on and near Edgewood Avenue, and as the fights escalated, a gun was produced and multiple shots were fired.
Willis sustained a single gunshot wound to his upper body.
The Grip has learned one of the three suspects – the Williams subject – had been turned in to authorities by his family, was being questioned and was cooperating with investigators Monday night, but later fled the Police Department.
“One of the three suspects, Christopher Williams, was brought into the PD last night and was being questioned. He had an active warrant at the time. Williams was cooperating during the interview and was allowed to use the restroom. When the detective that was with him was briefly distracted, Williams fled out the back of the PD and managed to get into the surrounding neighborhood on foot,” Richardson said. “An extensive search was made for Williams and is still ongoing, along with the other two suspects.”
After learning Williams was a suspect in the murder and that a warrant for his arrest had been issued, the suspect was brought to the PD by his family.
Anyone with additional information regarding the shooting or the whereabouts of the three suspects is asked to contact Lt. Tony Thomaston, the case agent, at 770.229.6450 extension 508, or by email at tthomaston@cityofgriffin.com.
