SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::
Investigators of the Griffin Police Department have identified the victim of a Monday evening shooting as 18-year-old Gideon Phazion Mays, of Chappell Street.
Arrested in connection with the incident is 23-year-old Terrize Stroud, who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.
“This was an accidental shooting; this was not a homicide,” said Lt. Mike Richardson, of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division. “He (Mays) was at a friend’s house. They were messing around with a gun when it accidentally discharged, striking the victim.”
Mays sustained a single gunshot wound to the neck area from a large-caliber weapon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Richardson said Stroud is cooperating with the investigation.
“Mr. Stroud contacted us. He didn’t try to run or hide or anything, and the evidence is consistent with his story,” he said.
Authorities have secured the weapon, but say it will not be examined before Tuesday.
Richardson did identify the round that caused Mays’ death as a 7.62 round.
Stroud is currently being held in the Spalding County Jail.
