Spalding deputy sustains minor injuries in vehicular aggravated assault; suspect remains at large

A Spalding County deputy sustained minor injuries when he was drug by a vehicle during a Thursday afternoon traffic stop.

The incident occurred at the Zetella Express on Newnan Road.

“The deputy is okay. He had some scrapes and possibly bruises, but he declined medical treatment,” said Capt. Dwayne Jones, of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.

A search remains underway for the driver accused of committing the assault against the deputy.

“We are actively seeking the suspect and his vehicle. He’s possibly from the Newnan/Coweta County area,” Jones said. “It’s a beige Toyota Camry, a 1997 model. The tag number is RKV2748.”

The suspect has been identified as a white male. Additional information is being withheld pending the outcome of the investigation.

“That’s near the vicinity of where this incident occurred,” Jones said.

Authorities say the driver had active warrants for his arrest, which they believe resulted in his attempt to flee the traffic stop.

“He did. He had outstanding warrants for misdemeanor VoP (violation of probation) and misdemeanor theft by taking. That’s what happened. During the traffic stop, the deputy found out he was wanted. He went to extract him – to take him out of the car…he was actually leaning in the car in an effort to take him out of the car and the driver took off. He drug the officer about 25 feet or so. It could have been worse. We’re thankful the deputy is okay.”

The driver is being sought on aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer and other charges.

An early identification has been found to be incorrect. Jones has confirmed that Michael Anthony Durham is not the driver being sought.

The GRIP will update this article as additional information becomes available.
