TPD investigating murder and residential robbery

STAFF REPORT :::

The Thomaston Police Department is investigating a homicide that allegedly began as a home robbery.

According to Chief Mike Richardson, officers responded at approximately 10:23 p.m. Tuesday to 121 Wellington Place in response to a robbery with a person possibly shot.

Upon arrival, officers located the resident, Michael Gates, inside his home with a gunshot wound.

Gates was transported to Upson Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1 a.m.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit was notified and responded to the scene to assist the TPD in its investigation.

Officials say the preliminary investigation indicates this homicide occurred as part of a drug related robbery.

Authorities say multiple suspects were witnessed fleeing the scene in what is believed to be an older model white or silver Honda.

Anyone with information related to this active investigation is asked to contact the Thomaston Police Department at 706.647.5455.
