BREAKING NEWS: District Attorney seeking GBI investigation of GPD C.A.G.E. Unit case

Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney Marie Broder has confirmed to The GRIP that she has asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate circumstances surrounding a criminal case of the Griffin Police Department Criminal Apprehension and Gang Enforcement (C.A.G.E.) Unit.

“I have requested a preliminary review to be done by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to determine if anything criminal has occurred,” Broder said Thursday. “I have not received an email back from them yet, but I have sent my letter. I have sent my request in.”

Broder’s request to the GBI is related to a case The GRIP has been investigating since January.

The C.A.G.E. Unit case in question was initiated in December 2021 by Agent Brian Dorety and was based on information he obtained from his girlfriend, Toni Berryman.

Dorety did not disclose his personal relationship with Berryman, nor did he acknowledge that Berryman and Thomas Taylor, a man targeted in the narcotic case, had a previous long-term relationship and shared a child.

Broder said she has asked the GBI “to determine if any criminal laws were violated before, during or after this investigation.”

She said her letter was quite brief and “very vague” because she wants them to go out and find the information.

Broder’s letter did cite the personal relationships between Berryman and both Thomas Taylor and Agent Brian Dorety.

It also cited Thomas Taylor’s suicide in the wake of the C.A.G.E. Unit investigation.

In this case, nearly 100 criminal charges involving four defendants have been dismissed.
