Smart Web remains under GBI and POST investigation; is not employed as LEO

After receiving numerous inquiries, The GRIP has confirmed that Smart Web, who previously served as Spalding County marshal, has not resumed law enforcement employment in Griffin-Spalding County.

Web, who was initially hired Feb. 22, 2022, resigned June 20, 2022.

Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix, Spalding County Manager Steve Ledbetter and Griffin City Manager Jessica O’Connor all confirmed that Web has not been hired in any capacity.

According to information provided by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST), Web is not currently employed as a law enforcement officer anywhere in the state.

Records also indicate Web is now the subject of a POST investigation.

In addition, there are two open Georgia Bureau of Investigations cases involving Smart Web – one related to his Spalding County employment and the second related to a previous stint as the city of Woodbury police chief.

Dix’s revocation of Web’s deputization resulted in his June 2022 resignation.

Dix took that action after a June 14, 2022, Maloy Road incident in which Web shot and killed a family pet in front of several family members, including a special needs teen.

Dix subsequently requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct an investigation of that incident, as well as further allegations of additional criminal and constitutional violations.
