SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::
Three teenaged suspects, Sydney Maughon, age 18, MacKenzie Davenport, age 19, and Jeremy Munson, age 18, have been charged with murder in connection with the Monday afternoon shooting death of 21-year-old Jonathan Gilbert, who went by the name Tyler Lane.
The shooting occurred in the roadway in front of a residence in the 100 block of Dobbins Mill Road.
According to Spalding County Sheriff Darrell Dix, the murder was spurred by “an ongoing lover’s quarrel,” and followed an act of vandalism at the victim’s home.
“These young people, they all knew each other, and there was this one girl, the guy who got killed, it was her ex-boyfriend. They (the alleged perpetrators) were over in Henry County, and they decided that they were going to go to his (Gilbert’s) house because they were mad at him and they were going to egg his house,” Dix said. “So, they pulled up, they got out, they started egging his house. He saw what was happening and he came out. When he opened the door, they took off running back to the car. They jumped back in the car, and as he approached the car, one of the females in the back seat…pulled out a pistol that was in the car, opened up on him and killed him.”
Dix said rumors that Gilbert was armed when he approached the suspects’ vehicle are false.
“He was not armed. He didn’t come out the door with a gun,” he said. “There was somebody that said he was armed, but he wasn’t, and they drove off and left him laying in the middle of the road, and he died.”
Information provided by a witness and video recovered from the area were instrumental in the investigation, as was the use of Flock – an automatic license plate reading camera system – and other technology used to identify the suspects.
“Investigators were able to locate a witness that provided them with information related to the shooting, and through that they created a direct link between the victim and the suspects,” Dix said. “Using that information, Investigators began their search for the suspects, located a cellphone number that was tied to one of them, and tracked it to a location in Henry County. At that point we contacted Henry County P.D., and they immediately sent officers to the area. They searched until they located the vehicle at a residence and were able to obtain a search warrant for the vehicle and the residence. During the search they retrieved the car that was used in the crime, along with the gun that we believe was used to shoot Gilbert. As the investigation progressed, more suspects were developed, and eventually arrested.”
Dix explained that while one suspect fired the weapon, all three suspects are culpable for Gilbert’s murder.
“Some people will say that girl is the one that pulled the trigger, so she should be charged with the murder. Well, they all went there – conspired to go there to commit crimes – and they were all in the car together when it happened, so they’re all three charged with murder,” he said. “They bought that ticket so they’re going to ride that ride. All they had to do was stay home, but they drove from Henry County to here to do that and ended up murdering somebody.”
Sydney Maughon has been charged with murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, batter – family violence and criminal trespass.
Jeremy Munson has been charged with murder, malice murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, battery and criminal trespass.
MacKenzie Davenport has been charged with malice murder, battery and criminal trespass.
“I bet they weren’t thinking about that when they went and got those eggs. I bet they weren’t thinking about murder, that they were going to end up in prison when they bought those eggs. All over a dispute between an ex-boyfriend and girlfriend,” Dix said.
