15-year-old boy dead after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds

SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

The Griffin Police Department is investigating the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy.

Officers were dispatched to 1100 W. College St. Extension late Saturday night in response to a call reporting a person had been shot.

According to Spalding County Coroner Michael Pryor, the call prompted a response from multiple first responders and his office.

“It was around 11 p.m. last night. The call came in originally as a person down. When city PD arrived on the scene, they found him there in the rear of the apartment complex. Griffin Fire arrived on scene and began rendering aid. Once EMS got there and realized the severity of the injuries, then they stopped treatment at that point. I pronounced him at 11:15. I had already gotten there and pronounced him dead,” Pryor said. “It’s another tragic, violent death of a person in the county. I affects everyone on the scene, both law enforcement, fire, EMS and the Coroner’s Office, also. But again, the number one thing right now is trying to get whoever is responsible for this and that’s what everyone is working towards right now.”

Pryor said to aid the investigative process, the victim is not yet being identified.

“We’re kind of holding off on that right now because of the investigative side of things. I have been in touch with his family, but we’re not ready to say anything more yet,” he said.

Asked if he could confirm reports that the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, Pryor said, “I’m sending him to the GBI crime lab to determine that but I will say that it was multiple times…He was shot in the upper torso.”
