Sheriff Dee Stewart critically injured in wreck

Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart was critically injured in a two-vehicle wreck just before 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon on Ga. Highway 19-41.

“He (Stewart) came off of Moose Lodge Road into the path of another vehicle,” said Sgt. John Corbett, of the Georgia State Patrol-Griffin Post.

The point of impact was Stewart’s passenger side door and his vehicle came to a final rest in a ditch approximtely 30 to 40 feet away, Corbett said. He added that both drivers were unrestrained.

The Ford Explorer that struck Stewart’s Silverado pickup truck was driven by 28-year-old Christopher Chad Gasaway, the sheriff’s grandson, who serves as a deputy for the Sheriff’s Office. He was off duty at the time.

Gasaway sustained minor injuries and was transported to Spalding Regional Medical Center by private vehicle, Corbett said.

According to a law enforcement source who asked not to be identified, Stewart sustained critical head injuries when his vehicle was struck as he attempted to cross the highway.

Due to the severity of Stewart’s injuries, it took approximately half an hour to stabilize him at the scene, the source said. He was subsequently flown to the trauma unit of Atlanta Medical Center.

Two separate sources have confirmed that Stewart is in extremely critical condition, requiring the assistance of a ventilator.
