Sheriff remains hospitalized in critical condition following Thursday wreck

Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart remains hospitalized in critical, but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit of Atlanta Medical Center following a two-vehicle wreck Thursday afternoon.

According to a press release issued Friday by Capt. Tony Ranieri, of the SCSO, Stewart’s family wished to thank the community for the outpouring of kindness following the Sheriff’s wreck.

In addition, Ranieri said the family wanted to put a stop to the many rumors circulating regarding Stewart’s condition, as well as the calls that are flooding the Sheriff’s Office.

Ranieri stated, in part, “He (Stewart) has undergone some tests to determine the extent of his head injury. When he arrived at the hospital, the doctors placed the Sheriff in a medically-induced coma and placed him on a ventilator.”

To dispel rumors circulating regarding events leading up to and immediately following Stewart’s wreck, Ranieri also said the Sheriff was at no time on life support, nor did he suffer a heart attack or stroke.

“The Sheriff has a serious head injury that is being monitored by doctors around the clock,” Ranieri said. “As the Sheriff progresses through this ordeal, the family and Sheriff’s Department will keep the citizens of Spalding County informed. We know there are a lot of friends and supporters of the Sheriff and we ask that everyone prays for a speedy recovery, and we will keep you posted as to his condition.”
