Spalding County Sheriff Dee Stewart on Sunday morning succumbed to injuries he sustained in a June 23 wreck.
County officials say Stewart, who had been in a medically- induced coma at Atlanta Medical Center as a result of critical head trauma, was removed from the ventilator Friday and was responding to voice commands.
“He was doing all right up until around 11 o’clock last night (Saturday) when he took a turn for the worse. After that, he really didn’t respond to anything else and he passed away this morning,” said Capt. Keith Duncan.
Conner-Westbury Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements, but service details are not yet known.
