Spalding honors fallen Clayton Co. deputy

Thursday’s late afternoon rain stopped just before Clayton Co. Deputy Richard “Rick” Daly’s 10-mile, 750-car funeral procession crossed Kalamazoo Drive on Hwy. 19 South.  At that intersection, Spalding County Firefighters, police officers and sheriff’s deputies gathered under a large American flag hung between two cranes over the highway to honor the fallen officer.

The procession is on its way to Moody Funeral Home in Daly’s hometown of Zebulon, Ga.

Daly was fatally shot while trying to serve 17-year-old Jonathan Bun a warrant in Riverdale last Wednesday.

The shooting occurred just outside Riverdale city limits around 3 p.m., near the intersection of East Fayetteville Road and Walker Road.  Deputy Daly was assisting the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office Fugitives Squad in serving an arrest warrant by conducting a traffic stop for undercover units.  Deputy Daly was in a marked patrol vehicle and full uniform at the time and offered his assistance.  While approaching the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect exited vehicle while shooting at Deputy Daly.  Deputy Daly was hit by the suspects shots and was rushed to the Southern Regional Medical Center, where he later passed away.

Other Deputies that were arriving to assist Deputy Daly chased the suspect and established a perimeter, keeping him in a closed in area.  A manhunt began immediately, involving  numerous local, state, and federal agencies from all over the Atlanta area.  After an extensive six-hour search, the suspect was taken into custody to answer to the new charges of murder, in addition to the charges of aggravated assault and armed robbery for which he was being pursued.
