Griffin woman succumbs to alleged domestic violence-related injuries

Debra McCullough, of 193 Covington Road, Griffin, died Friday as a result of injuries allegedly inflicted July 22 by her husband, 53-year-old Jeff McCullough.

According to Spalding County Interim Sheriff Dwayne Gilbert, Jeff McCullough was originally arrested July 20 after deputies responded to a domestic dispute call at the family’s residence.

After speaking with Debra McCullough, deputies ascertained sufficient evidence existed to arrest Jeff McCullough for battery under the Family Violence Act.

In the early morning hours of July 22, first responders were again dispatched to the McCullough residence. At that time, authorities say emergency medical technicians located friends who expressed concern for Debra McCullough, claiming she had “passed out.”

Debra McCullough was subsequently transported to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Medical Center before later being transferred to Atlanta Medical Center with a severe head injury.

Upon her transfer to Atlanta Medical Center, the charge against Jeff McCullough was upgraded to aggravated battery under the Family Violence Act.

“We held him for investigative purposes until Monday when we had to release that hold, and he made a $33,000 bond and is currently out of jail,” said Capt. Tony Ranieri, of the SCSO Criminal Investigation Division.

Gilbert said investigators were notified Friday night that Debra McCullough    had never regained consciousness and died as a result of those injuries.

Debra McCullough’s body was been transported to the Georgia State Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, Ranieri said.

Investigators attended the autopsy conducted Saturday, but a determination could not be made at that time, pending the medical records from both

“Once we have gathered the medical evidence and conducted interviews with the doctors, the case will be brought to the District Attorney’s Office,” said Ranieri.

Authorities say the investigation is continuing.
