Flowers unseats Evans; Todd and Hollberg retain BOC seats

Two Griffin Board of Commission members – Joanne Todd, representing District 4 and Doug Hollberg, representing the city at-large – were on Tuesday reelected to serve another term while a third incumbent, Will Evans, was unseated by Cora Flowers, who will now represent District 2.

Also carried by voters were two questions on the ballot – those of whether to approve the city of Griffin’s sale of the Pimento Avenue School to New Mercy Baptist Church and for Sunday package alcohol sales.

In the District 4 race, Commissioner Joanne Todd faced two opponents, Alan Stanfield and Doug Craig. With all precincts and absentee votes tallied, Todd received 267, or 56.9 percent of the votes, to Craig’s 115 and Stanfield’s 87.

For the city-at-large seat, Hollberg received 1,125 votes, or 64.25 percent of the ballots cast, as opposed to 621 cast for his opponent, Joe Ward Jr.

The District 2 race was by far the closest of the evening with Flowers, who received 116 votes, or 51.79 percent, winning the seat by a margin of only eight votes over Evans, a former officer of the Griffin Police Department who had served one term on the Board of Commissioners, for whom 108 votes were cast.

Sunday package alcohol sales were approved by a margin of 1,059 to 784. This will allow stores with alcohol licenses to sell beer and wine from 12:30 to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays.

The final question on Tuesday’s ballot asked voters to determine if New Mercy Baptist Church will be allowed to purchase for $50,000 the former Head Start building located at 742 Pimento Ave. Voters approved the sale by a margin of 1,494 votes in favor to 307 opposed.
