Moore Elementary School, located at the intersection of N. 6th Street and Cabin Creek Drive, was placed on lockdown Monday afternoon following a nearby robbery.

According to Capt. Dwayne Jones, of the Griffin Police Department, the school was locked down as a precautionary safety measure.

“There was an armed robbery in the street near the school,” he said. “It didn’t involve a business; it was individuals, and the school was placed on lockdown to make sure no one involved could enter the building.”

Reports from inside the school indicated that police units were on scene at nearby Heritage Apartments.

Approximately one hour after the incident began, Jones said one suspect had been apprehended and is in police custody.

He was uncertain if any additional suspects remained at-large, but the lockdown at Moore Elementary School had been lifted.
