GPD releases identity of shooting suspect

SHEILA MATHEWS :::

The Griffin Police Department has identified 31-year-old Justin Adam Holloway as the suspect being sought in connection with an early Tuesday morning shooting at the Super Speedway located at 678 N. Expressway.
Investigator Keith Dryden, of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division, has obtained warrants for Holloway’s arrest on three felony charges including aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Holloway is described as a white male of medium build, with brown hair and blue eyes. He has a tattoo above his left eyebrow and on both sides of his neck.
According to Dryden, the investigation is ongoing and has broadened beyond the initial incident.
“Our investigation at this point has identified him (Holloway) as the perpetrator of the shooting, and the focus of the investigation has now shifted to other individuals who may have assisted with his fleeing the scene,” Dryden said. “Right now, we are looking at two additional suspects that we believe are with Mr. Holloway and additional charges are pending.”
Holloway and the shooting victim, identified as Justin Melton are believed to be acquaintances.
Police first responded Tuesday to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Hospital, where Melton had been transported by private vehicle.
Melton reported that while at the Super Speedway at approximately 2:40 a.m., he approached a vehicle occupied by several males. He said while speaking with them, a verbal altercation occurred, and that one of the men in the vehicle brandished a handgun and fired one shot striking Melton in the right ribcage. The vehicle and suspects then fled the scene, officials said.
One of the victim’s friends that was inside the store reported hearing a loud pop and discovered Melton had been shot. He then transported him to the emergency room where he was treated and released.
Authorities say Holloway was identified as the shooter following several interviews and a review of the Super Speedway surveillance footage.
Melton, who sustained a single gunshot wound at close range is expected to fully recover.
Anyone with information pertaining to the shooting or Holloway’s whereabouts is asked to contact Dryden at 770.229.6450 or wdryden@cityofgriffin.com.
