SHEILA MATHEWS :::
Griffin High School football Coach Steve DeVoursney resigned today, effective immediately.
According to Griffin-Spalding County School Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones, DeVoursney submitted a voluntary resignation.
“It was voluntary. He was not given the option of resigning in lieu of termination,” Jones said.
When asked if DeVoursney’s resignation was precipitated by a complaint of any nature, Jones acknowledged school officials had received a one against the football coach.
“We have been investigating a complaint that was made in October (2013) concerning an issue from 2011,” Jones said.
Jones declined to delve into further detail regarding either the complaint or subsequent investigation, but said additional information will be forthcoming.
He said a special called meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, and that he anticipates board members will approve DeVoursney’s resignation.
DeVoursney in 2013 led the Bears football team to its first state championship title in 36 years.
