Wednesday afternoon shooting victim dies at Atlanta Medical Center

SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

Robert Murray Jr., the 39-year-old victim of a Wednesday afternoon shooting, has died at Atlanta Medical Center.
Griffin Police Department Chief Steve Heaton said Murray Jr. sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest at his place of employment – Robert’s Collision Center, located at 1416 Meriwether St. – which is owned by his father, Robert Murray Sr.
Heaton said the suspect, 29-year-old Christopher Willis, fled the scene on foot, firing a second shot at Murray Sr., who was uninjured.
Lt. Mike Richardson, of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division, said the motive for the shooting is unknown, but that Willis did have a vehicle in the shop.
Murray Jr. was initially transported to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Medical Center. After being stabilized, he was airlifted to the trauma center of Atlanta Medical Center.
Willis was initially charged with two counts of aggravated assault and assorted weapons violations. Those charges will now be upgraded.
“Investigator Kelly McKinney will have to confer with the District Attorney’s Office, but we’ll be upgrading the charges all the way,” Richardson said.
