Friday home invasion, murder victim identified

The Griffin Police Department is actively investigating a Friday night murder that occurred at approximately 9 p.m. at 223 W. Tinsley St.

The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Walter Horton, of Griffin. Horton was transported to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds.

Lt. Mike Richardson, of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division, said two suspects are being sought.

“According to multiple witnesses, two black males wearing masks and gloves entered the residence and ordered everyone to the ground and demanded that they, ‘Give it up.’ During the alleged robbery attempt, for reasons unknown at this time, the suspects fired three shots, striking him (Horton) once, possibly twice,” Richardson said.

He said the victim sustained one through-and-through gunshot wound to his arm, and also suffered a second entry wound to the side of his chest.

“The one in his chest lines up with the one in his arm, so we think both wounds may be from a single gunshot, but we won’t know for sure until the autopsy,” Richardson said.

Richardson said there were several other victims present in the Tinsley Street residence at the time the home invasion occurred, but no other injuries were reported.

Witnesses reported the suspects left the scene in a black SUV.

“It may be a black Jeep Cherokee, but we don’t know that for sure,” Richardson said.
