GPD: Friday night murder was home invasion

SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

The Griffin Police Department is actively investigating a Friday night murder that occurred at 223 W. Tinsley St.

Officials have not yet released the deceased’s identity, saying only that the victim was a male.

Lt. Mike Richardson, of the GPD Criminal Investigation Division, said two suspects are being sought.

“Right now, it’s looking like a home invasion robbery. Two men entered wearing masks and gloves and fired three shots. We’ve recovered three shell casings,” he said. “At this time, we believe the victim was struck one, maybe two times.”

He said the victim sustained one through-and-through gunshot wound to his arm, and also suffered a second entry wound to the side of his chest.

“The one in his chest lines up with the one in his arm, so we think both wounds may be from a single gunshot, but we won’t know for sure until the autopsy,” Richardson said.

The victim was transported to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Richardson said the investigation remains active and ongoing.

“We’re currently still actively interviewing witnesses that were there at the house,” he said.

Witnesses reported the suspects left the scene in a black SUV.

“It may be a black Jeep Cherokee, but we don’t know that for sure,” Richardson said.
