Woman shot in county Saturday morning; transported to Atlanta trauma unit

SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

One woman was wounded in a Saturday shooting now being investigated by the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Wendell Beam, the incident occurred on Highway 41 in the vicinity of Williamson Road.

“From what I understand, the victim sustained a single gunshot wound,” he said. “The victim was shot somewhere in the back.”

Capt. Tony Ranieri, of the SCSO Criminal Investigation Division, said the victim – a female – was sitting in the front passenger seat and was shot by a male subject seated in the vehicle’s back seat. The male subject allegedly fired one shot.

The victim was then transported in that same vehicle to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Hospital.

Due to the nature of her injuries, the victim was immediately transported by air to an Atlanta hospital trauma unit.

Officers of the Griffin Police Department responded first to the hospital, but upon learning the shooting occurred in the county, the SCSO initiated its investigation.

No arrests have been made in this case, and investigators are continuing to gather information.

“How the shot was fired I don’t know. Whether it was intentional or accidental remains to be determined. Investigators are still actively working the case,” Ranieri said. “The person that actually fired the shot fled from the hospital, so investigators haven’t been able to speak to him.”

Beam said the victim was able to briefly speak to investigators prior to being airlifted to Atlanta.

“The victim did give investigators a name before she was flown out. She did identify the other people that were in the car,” Beam said. “Investigators are looking for those individuals now so they can interview them and determine if any charges will be filed in this incident.”
