According to Spalding County Sheriff Wendell Beam, an arrest has been made in the Saturday shooting that left one woman hospitalized in serious condition.

Dustin Joel Stevens, age 33, of 239 Westin Park Drive, Locust Grove, was being sought in connection with the incident that occurred in a vehicle on Highway 41 in the vicinity of Williamson Road.

Authorities on Saturday said the victim, 21-year-old Amber Faye Andrews, of Jackson, sustained a single gunshot wound to the back while riding in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. Stevens was alleged to have fired the weapon from the back passenger seat.

Andrews was transported to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Hospital in that same vehicle, where she was met by officers of the Griffin Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was subsequently air lifted to the trauma unit of Atlanta Medical Center, but she was first able to provide investigators with a statement regarding the shooting.

Stevens, however, fled from authorities.

Capt. Tony Ranieri, of the SCSO Criminal Investigation Division, said the suspect was apprehended later that same day.

“He was taken into custody on hospital grounds,” Ranieri said. “He was unarmed and arrested without incident.”

Andrews remains hospitalized at AMC and is listed in stable condition.

Ranieri confirmed that investigators have determined Stevens discharged the firearm accidentally and the shooting was unintentional.

Stevens has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, reckless conduct and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He is being held without bond in the Spalding County Jail.
