Saturday aggravated assault leaves one wounded, two arrested

SHEILA A. MATHEWS :::

Two Griffin men – Ellis Sands, also known as “Po Boy,” and Querterrious Mayes, also known as “Foo Foo Smooth” – have been arrested and charged in connection to a Saturday morning shooting in Quiet Hills Apartments located at 805 North Avenue.

The incident was reported at approximately 1:13 a.m. to the Spalding County 911 Center, with two calls reporting shots fired. One call reported a person had been shot.

Personnel of the Griffin Police Department’s Uniform Patrol Division responded and made contact with Covan Hill, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the left arm.

Hill was transported to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.

Investigator Stacy Beckom and Crime Scene Investigator Jennifer Michel were called to the scene where Hill reported that Sands and an unknown male came to his residence, where the unknown male brandished a firearm and fired several rounds at him.

The GPD Power Squad, supervised by Sgt. Joe Hudson, policed the area to locate the suspects.

“Shortly after the incident, the Power Squad witnessed an intoxicated person on Kentucky Ave., and upon seeing police, he fled, throwing a .40 caliber pistol, which was the same caliber as the shell casings found at Quiet Hills,” said Lt. Michael Natale, of the Office of the Chief.

Power Squad personnel apprehended this subject who was later identified as Mayes.

Officials say Hill described the recovered weapon, and also that Mayes was wearing a red bandana, as Hill had earlier reported.

Hill later positively identified both Sands and Mayes in photo lineups.

A search warrant was executed on Mayes for gunshot residue (GSR), which Beckom said was detected.

According to Beckom, Mayes also allegedly posted his photograph on Facebook at 11:20 p.m. Friday, June 26, with the red bandana on his head, the gun in his pants and a caption pertaining to always keeping his .40 on him.

Beckom credits a cooperative effort with a rapid resolution to this case.

“It was a well-coordinated effort on behalf of the Uniform Patrol Division to secure and preserve the scene and gather the initial information, the Crime Scene Unit in processing the scene and the Power Squad, which located him and contacted me for information on the weapon used,” Beckom said. “Without the good work they put forth, we wouldn’t have been able to affect the arrests of both suspects so quickly. Many cases we don’t resolve this quickly, but in this case, within a matter of a few hours, we did, and that’s indicative of very good work put forth by all officers involved.”

Mayes is being held in the Spalding County Jail on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault, armed robbery, criminal gang activity, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, pedestrian under the influence and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Sands is also being held in the Spalding County Jail and faces charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and armed robbery.

    I think Griffin needs to invest in a gang unit to help stop these incidents from happening
