Griffin’s Park at Sixth Wins Statewide Recognition at the Georgia Downtown Awards

The Griffin Main Street Program recently received a $1,000.00 prize and was honored at the 2011 Georgia Downtown Conference at its annual Downtown Excellence Awards Banquet. The Park at Sixth won the Outstanding New Construction / Infill Award. “This honor is presented to a project that is sensitively designed and implemented to bring new activity to a vacant lot, brownfield site, or an addition to an existing structure that increases a downtown’s vitality,” said Kira Harris-Braggs, Griffin Main Street Program Manager. “With the completion of Phases I and II of The Park at Sixth, we have already been able to host a Doc’tober Days event, June Jam 2011, and several of the Downtown Free Movie Series showings— bringing hundreds of people back downtown. We are now looking forward to finishing the Park with the addition of the J. William Edwards Pavilion, that is scheduled for completion by December 2011.

“The Griffin Main Street Program has created a catalyst in Downtown Griffin,” said Daa’ood Amin, Griffin Main Street Advisory Board Chairman. “By leading the effort to create this award- wining greenspace, we have shown other communites across the state that creative use of underutilized spaces can bring life into a downtown area. We’ve hosted events in the Park at Sixth and on any given day you can find people utilizing the park as a place to eat their lunch, meet friends, or just relax. It is an asset that will remain a downtown focal point for years to come.”
