Friday shooting leaves man in critical condition


The Griffin Police Department has arrested Jamal Foster in connection with a Friday night shooting that left one man in critical condition.

The GPD Uniform Patrol Division responded at approximately 8:39 p.m. to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Hospital in reference to the shooting victim. Officers spoke with the victim, Derrick Smith, of Griffin, who reported he had been walking in the 700 block of E. Wall St. when a black male identified as Foster drove by him in a Chevrolet Impala and began shooting at him.

After sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest, Smith drove himself to the emergency room where he received initial treatment before being transported to Atlanta Medical Center.

Smith remains hospitalized at AMC in critical condition.

Foster was later brought to the Griffin Police Department where he turned himself in.

Foster has been charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to children in the third degree and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Foster is now being held in the Spalding County Jail.
