Fatal Wednesday night fire under investigation

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a Wednesday night fire on Kennedy Drive that resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman.

Officials say the Spalding County Fire Department and Spalding Regional Hospital Emergency Medical Services on April 13 responded at 11:05 p.m. to the report of a structure fire at 1511 Kennedy Drive. Initial information received indicated an individual may be trapped inside the structure.

Upon arrival on scene, fire units observed the structure fully involved on one side with the fire rapidly spreading. Fire units entered the structure in an attempt to suppress the fire. Contact was also made with the neighboring residents who were evacuated for their safety.

At approximately 12:55 a.m., search teams recovered the body of a 37 year-old-female in the master bathroom of the structure.

Once the scene was cleared by Spalding County Fire Marshal Harold Williams and State Fire Marshal Mickey Hunt, Spalding County Coroner Sonny Foster and members of the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office began their investigations.

According to Williams, the origin fire appeared to have been the master bedroom at the rear of the structure.

Once the initial investigation was complete, the victim’s body was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for further analysis.

During the incident, one member of the Spalding County Fire Department was transported to Spalding Regional Hospital.

At this time no names are being released as the investigation remains ongoing and members of the victim’s family have yet to be notified.
