GBI investigating alleged suicide attempt by local LEO’s wife

Publisher note: It is The GRIP’s policy to not routinely report on suicides or attempted suicides. However, this incident involves a family member of a local law enforcement officer and is under investigation by the GBI. The information contained in this report was released by the Griffin Police Department, and The GRIP will follow up with additional information as it becomes available.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken over the investigation of a shooting incident at Ashford Place Apartments that involved a local law enforcement officer’s wife.

Authorities say at approximately 1 a.m. Friday, personnel of the Griffin Police Department responded to 53 Ashford Place Apartments in reference to a person threatening suicide. As police officers, Griffin Fire-Rescue and Spalding Regional Hospital Emergency Medical Services units were responding, one of the residents of 53 Ashford Place Apartments, GPD Officer Mathew Boynton, arrived and then responded via his police department issued mobile radio that he heard two shots possibly from his apartment.

Lt. Curtis Keys along with additional officers arrived at the scene. Officer Boynton met these officers outside his apartment. Officers then entered the apartment and searched for Officer Boynton’s wife.

Officers subsequently located Jessica Boynton inside a closet with a locked door which they had to forcibly open.

Jessica Boynton was unconscious, but breathing, on the floor of the closet. She had sustained a single gunshot wound to the right side of her head.

Griffin Fire-Rescue arrived on the scene and began administering medical care.

EMS personnel were able to stabilize Jessica Boynton and she was then flown by Emory Life Flight to Atlanta Medical Center.

According to Atlanta Medical Center, at approximately 6 a.m., Jessica Boynton was in critical, but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The entire scene and investigation was turned over to the GBI.

Officer Boynton has been placed on administrative leave pending a departmental investigation.

  3. Nancy Mobley says:

How in the world do you think you have a right to publish this story when you don’tn know all the facts! You’ve only heard one side of the story, no one knows the wife’s side or have spoken to her family. What irresponsible journalism!
