  • The Spalding County Board of Education concluded a hearing minutes ago to find whether a statement made by GSCS Superintendent Curtis Jones was sexual harassment, after a complaint was filed by Kennedy Road Middle School teacher Shonte Ivey.  After roughly three hours of testimony and 30 minutes in an executive session, the board found that Dr. Jones' statement did not constitute sexual harassment. More detailed information to follow.
  • On March 19 the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office learned that the runaway/endangered juvenile Noel Sanchez arrived at school with his parents.  Sheriff Beam would like to thank the community for the number of calls that were generated by the story last week that helped authorities with the investigation.  Noel is doing fine and the investigation will continue to determine if any criminal charges will be filed.
  • On Saturday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Griffin Stormwater Division and volunteers will convene in the Old WalMart Parking to clean up local streams. Lunch, a gift bag, and a T-shirt designed by a local school kid will be provided to volunteers. Call the Stormwater Division to sign up at 770-229-6424 and show up ready to get dirty!
  • On Saturday, March 24 the Candler Field Museum will host a Hangar Dance to benefit the museum.  The theme for the dance will be the 1940s with an emphasis on WWII.  The Modernaires, an 18-piece orchestra from the Atlanta area, will provide 1930’s and 1940’s music. You are encouraged to dress in period attire although this is certainly not required.  If you are not a dancer come and enjoy the music and fellowship.  It will be a fun evening for all. A silent auction will also be held throughout the evening.  The event begins with a social gathering at 6 PM.  A sit down dinner will be served at 6:30 and the orchestra will play from 7:30 PM until 10 PM. Tickets are $50 per person and all proceeds go to the museum.  Candler Field Museum is a nonprofit organization and all donations are tax deductible.   You may also purchase tickets at Barnstormer’s Grill, at Antique Griffin or by calling 770-467-9490.  You may also purchase tickets online by going to www.candlerfield.com.   • The Spalding County Sheriff's Office has issued a correction to  the story that was issued yesterday regarding the runaway/endangered juvenile. The name of the juvenile was incorrect, the name should be Noel Colin Sanchez, it is not Edgar as originally reported.
  • The Griffin Area Concert Association has issued a correction to the earlier information published regarding the upcoming Emily Hearn concert. The original article stated the concert would be held on Thursday, January 17, 2012. The correct date for her performance is Tuesday, January 17, 2012, not Thursday. The Griffin Area Concert Association and The Grip apologize for this error.
  • Tyson Fresh Meats issued a voluntary recall of over 40000 pounds of ground beef  that may be contaminated with a strain of E. coli bacteria. The meat has a "Best Before or Freeze By" date of "11/13/11." The USDA has placed a health risk of "High," and the recall is active for 16 states, including Georgia.
  • Due to the upcoming holiday season, The Grip tweaked the print calendar a bit.  To avoid Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve issues, we rescheduled the Sept. 29 issue of The Grip to move forward to Oct. 6. Look for the next issue next Thursday!
